Trials, Transitions & Triumphs

I'm sitting alone in a lil cafe in my home town having breakfast reflecting on the events of this year so far...

Things have gone from comfortable to bad. From bad to worse and back round' again.
In the midst of it all I've learned some great things about myself. Nothing highlights your strength, resilience, creativity and resourcefulness like navigating your way tough times.

I realize now that I'm transitioning out of my period of tribulation, that this wasn't a series of random unfortunate events but the necessary kick in the tush needed to open my eyes to what I'm capable of accomplishing.

One in my position might consider themselves back at square one, but I consider myself steps ahead. The reset button may have been pushed on my wherewithal, but my life in general is in full forward progression and picking up steam. Yet with all things considered I can confidently say that as good as God has been to me in this life already, the best is yet to come

Beef With the Chef??!!

The saying goes "opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one" & rumor has it that we're entitled to have said opinion... By the simple nature that we're individuals & supposed independent thinkers it stands to reason that our opinions are occasionally going to differ.

I'm a person who welcomes differing opinions, I don't automatically label thinking not inline with my own as "shade" or "hate" I believe that feedback of all types is crucial to our personal growth, development, and/or improvement. Which is why I am dumbfounded by a recent & unfortunate incident stemming from having expressed my honest opinion re: a post by Chef Roble Ali  on a social networking platform that resulted in what I believe to be an unwarranted block.

I have given him my full and unwavering support, countless acknowledgements and/or accolades, and even engaged with him directly a few times over this past year. I honestly weighed in on his "Black Girls Rock" ensem and promptly had my "follower" privileges revoked!

Me, the same follower that met & took pictures with him just a few short months ago. That he in his own words referred to as "amazing" in a comment on one of my posts for that event. That he cheered just a couple of weeks ago for advocating his right to enjoy an inexpensive wine or three if he so chooses...

As unfortunate and as hard as it is to wrap my head around being banished to the infamous InstaGram "d-block" by Roble for merely being honest, I have no option but to respect his right to do so. At the end of the day it is his account to do with what he will.

Although I'm no longer privy to the funny, witty and occasionally raunchy IG antics of Chef Roble I'll remain an avid fan/supporter of him and all of his endeavors. I'm confident that as a person who values his right to express himself honestly (as he routinely does) in a society where bandwagon jumping is all to common, he ultimately appreciates honest feedback. I'm sorry that he found my comment to be anything other than that and am hopeful that he accepts my sincerest apology. I'm not necessarily looking to be granted a reprieve from "d-block" but I'm also confident that one day in the not so distant future this incident will be a laughable recount of "remember when"...

A Simple Guide to Accessorizing...

I'm confident that all fashion/style professionals would agree that accessories can make or break an outfit. Seriously, we've all watched Project Runway at some point and witnessed a contestant get ripped to shreds over poor "styling" choices. So I've put together a few simple points of rule for successful accessorizing.

Purpose: Accessories should reflect your personal aesthetic and are supposed to compliment or enhance your look, not overtake it. Nor should it add an element of confusion.

Accessories can pick up/highlight an understated tone/color in an outfit. Add an element of contrast to monochromatic look. Give energy to an otherwise demure look. Even transform a single outfit into a totally different look.

Proportion: For me, proportion matters. Frankly, the "statement" trend has led many to (as we say in my circle) "do the most", which by-the-way is not a good thing. If your outfit is making a statement all by itself, your accessories should not add the "?" to the "!" essentially invoking that "what type of foolishness?!?!" reaction. In this scenario the K.I.S.S (keep it simple sweetie) method should be considered.

Outside of that, choose where/how you want to make your statement. Your ears, neck, and wrist don't all need to "shout" at the same time creating an environment of competing noise. Statement earrings... simple complimenting necklace. Bold necklace.... downplay your earrings.

Bracelets however, offer a little more flexibility since your wrist isn't right up there with your other  pieces. For me, size/color/style are influenced by the details of the top/jacket I'm wearing in concert with the style of my other accessories. For example...

When I wear this bib necklace (my own design) I allow it to be the focal accessory. Depending on my outfit, my earring choice is usually one of three;

  • the ones designed to match
  • simple wooden window pane dangles
  • gold plated Aspen leaves w/lever back ear-wires

My bracelet would likely be a cuff on one arm and a mixed stack of bracelets on the other.

If I'm dressing down, the cuff would be a 3 inch multi-strand wooden stretch.

If I'm going for something a little more upscale I'd ditch the mixed stack and wear a simple tennis bracelet on one arm and on the other a 2-3 inch polished gold metal cuff (smooth or textured depending on my mood). So now in either scenario I'm completely adorned, but not over-done.

Necklaces: Simple tops are the perfect backdrop for a great statement piece. Whether a big/bold/colorful piece, or layers of mixed metals in varied lengths.

Heavily patterned or embellished tops call for a more subtle approach. A simple bold link chain or pendant will do. In this case less really is more.

With halters, or tops will already ornate necklines I usually forgo additional neck-wear and focus more on the ears, wrist, hair & shoes.

Bracelets: Awesome displays of arm-candy are the trend. Stacked bangles, multiple layers of beads, multi-chain, and wide cuffs, with a little bling thrown in for flair.

There really aren't many rules for bracelets. My best advice is to make  sure your choices are appropriate for the occasion. In other words and arm full of stacked beads/bangles might not be the best choice for a formal gown.

Earrings: Choosing earrings aren't just about your outfit, or your other styling choices. The shape of your face and the length of your neck also play a factor. For instance, dangle earrings (in my opinion) don't fair well on women with short necks. However, hoops seem to be a universal "good fit" for everyone. Hoops come in varied sizes and styles making them appropriate for virtually any face shape, neck size, outfit, and/or occasion.

I, myself, am a fan of the dramatic dangle. Yet, even I have to  occasionally defer to the almighty hoop.

Last and maybe most important, your earrings should not battle with your necklace. Choose only one to be the standout, either the earrings or the necklace.

Rings: I am not a huge wearer of rings, but the trend seems to be leaning toward "anything goes". I don't subscribe to that philosophy however. I do like some of large statement pieces, and cocktail baubles. I also like the stacked look. I do not, however, support the ring on every finger look. It is ridiculously excessive.

There you have it... my two scents on how to  effectively accessorize. My only other tips would be to
  • carefully consult your mirror before embarking on your outing
  • when in doubt, consult a REAL friend (real friends will be brutally honest)
  • stay true to yourself
Now, go forth and accessorize with confidence!

STILL BUZZED ON ROBLE....

So... If you've read my last few posts you should be well aware that I am a HUGE fan of Roble Ali...

I definitely have an affinity for the man, but not in that fanatical, crazed, groupie sorta way. I mean... he's handsome, and talented, and funny, and engaging, and stylish, and accomplished, and I really could go on but more than any of those other things he is inspiring! That's it... he inspires me.

I've watched his show since episode 1, season 1. I've since done some research and learned more about his story. He isn't just some fly-by-night phenom nor the latest over night sensation, he's been honing his craft damn near his whole life. Through training, working his way up the rungs, and forging integral relationships (despite his tendency to at times be quite curt) he has parlayed his passion into a lucrative career. As he explains in season 1 of his show, he wanted to do his thing - his way. So he took his life savings, stepped out on faith, worked hard & made it happen!

Roble's story isn't necessarily unique, but it is definitely inspiring and it resonates with me because my story is very similar although he's way ahead of me chapter wise.

I've worked myself ragged helping million/billion dollar organizations fortify their bottom lines, all while being paid literal peanuts. I managed the day-side logistics/replenishment process in a high performing location of big-box retailer that easily generated more than a million a day in revenue. After that I went to work as a store manager for a well known discount chain where my hours were 10 -16 a day 6-7 days a week, literally. Where I took a store drowning in loss and turned it around in 9 months. This was my last experience as an "employee". I've always known that I wasn't meant to be any one's  employee, but that was the moment I decided that I never would be again.

With all that said, forging my own path and building my own empire has been a series of exhilarating highs & very trying lows. Yet I persevere, and when I see that next awesome experience/opportunity that Roble is embarking on I get excited and renewed! Why? Not because I get to live vicariously, but because Roble is proof positive that earnest effort and hard work does pay off.

So yes... I am still totally buzzing on having met him, and even more having him acknowledge meeting me!

It's not everyday that someone gets the opportunity to me the source of their inspiration. I DID & I'm gonna be buzzing off that for a while... so deal with it! (Lol)

EVERYDAY PEOPLE BRUNCH CHICAGO WITH CHEF ROBLE ALI & SKYY VODKA

If you don't know who Roble Ali is... WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOUR LIFE??!!

Not only is he one of the hottest and most talented up and coming chef's, he's the star of his own reality show Chef Roble & Co. which airs on Bravo TV.

On August 18th together with Skyy Vodka he brought the first ever installment of the Everyday People Brunch to Chicago and Provocative Expression was in the building!

He started the brunch/day party movement in New York with good friends Saada Medny and DJ Moma, which from what I understand, was a simple small get together for extremely diverse group of friends. Since then it has grown to be the ultimate day party experience with a super exclusive guest list in its home state. Roble often touts via his Instagram profile that the monthly New York installment is "invitation only" and if you're privileged enough to be extended actual membership "all we ask is trust". How secret society is that?! More recently the trio of comrades have taken the show on the road making stops in major cities all across the country.

I had a phenomenal time at the brunch. I ate, drank, partied and even got a little networking in. The icing on cake however, was actually meeting Roble and having him compliment the shirt I made especially for this event. My method was crude, I literally accosted the brother as he walked by but hey, you gottta do what you gotta do. (Lol)

By the way, if you ever have the opportunity to taste Roble's 'shrimp and grits' do not pass it up! I grew up in a household that favored buttered & sugared grits, so to have something so savory and flavorful just blew my mind.

I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next time Roble brunches in Chicago. However, I would love it even more to experience the famed New York event. The only thing better would be to attend the New York event as Roble's special guest.  (You hear that universe?!) I already have tshirt #2 ready to go!
