A Simple Guide to Accessorizing...

I'm confident that all fashion/style professionals would agree that accessories can make or break an outfit. Seriously, we've all watched Project Runway at some point and witnessed a contestant get ripped to shreds over poor "styling" choices. So I've put together a few simple points of rule for successful accessorizing.

Purpose: Accessories should reflect your personal aesthetic and are supposed to compliment or enhance your look, not overtake it. Nor should it add an element of confusion.

Accessories can pick up/highlight an understated tone/color in an outfit. Add an element of contrast to monochromatic look. Give energy to an otherwise demure look. Even transform a single outfit into a totally different look.

Proportion: For me, proportion matters. Frankly, the "statement" trend has led many to (as we say in my circle) "do the most", which by-the-way is not a good thing. If your outfit is making a statement all by itself, your accessories should not add the "?" to the "!" essentially invoking that "what type of foolishness?!?!" reaction. In this scenario the K.I.S.S (keep it simple sweetie) method should be considered.

Outside of that, choose where/how you want to make your statement. Your ears, neck, and wrist don't all need to "shout" at the same time creating an environment of competing noise. Statement earrings... simple complimenting necklace. Bold necklace.... downplay your earrings.

Bracelets however, offer a little more flexibility since your wrist isn't right up there with your other  pieces. For me, size/color/style are influenced by the details of the top/jacket I'm wearing in concert with the style of my other accessories. For example...

When I wear this bib necklace (my own design) I allow it to be the focal accessory. Depending on my outfit, my earring choice is usually one of three;

  • the ones designed to match
  • simple wooden window pane dangles
  • gold plated Aspen leaves w/lever back ear-wires

My bracelet would likely be a cuff on one arm and a mixed stack of bracelets on the other.

If I'm dressing down, the cuff would be a 3 inch multi-strand wooden stretch.

If I'm going for something a little more upscale I'd ditch the mixed stack and wear a simple tennis bracelet on one arm and on the other a 2-3 inch polished gold metal cuff (smooth or textured depending on my mood). So now in either scenario I'm completely adorned, but not over-done.

Necklaces: Simple tops are the perfect backdrop for a great statement piece. Whether a big/bold/colorful piece, or layers of mixed metals in varied lengths.

Heavily patterned or embellished tops call for a more subtle approach. A simple bold link chain or pendant will do. In this case less really is more.

With halters, or tops will already ornate necklines I usually forgo additional neck-wear and focus more on the ears, wrist, hair & shoes.

Bracelets: Awesome displays of arm-candy are the trend. Stacked bangles, multiple layers of beads, multi-chain, and wide cuffs, with a little bling thrown in for flair.

There really aren't many rules for bracelets. My best advice is to make  sure your choices are appropriate for the occasion. In other words and arm full of stacked beads/bangles might not be the best choice for a formal gown.

Earrings: Choosing earrings aren't just about your outfit, or your other styling choices. The shape of your face and the length of your neck also play a factor. For instance, dangle earrings (in my opinion) don't fair well on women with short necks. However, hoops seem to be a universal "good fit" for everyone. Hoops come in varied sizes and styles making them appropriate for virtually any face shape, neck size, outfit, and/or occasion.

I, myself, am a fan of the dramatic dangle. Yet, even I have to  occasionally defer to the almighty hoop.

Last and maybe most important, your earrings should not battle with your necklace. Choose only one to be the standout, either the earrings or the necklace.

Rings: I am not a huge wearer of rings, but the trend seems to be leaning toward "anything goes". I don't subscribe to that philosophy however. I do like some of large statement pieces, and cocktail baubles. I also like the stacked look. I do not, however, support the ring on every finger look. It is ridiculously excessive.

There you have it... my two scents on how to  effectively accessorize. My only other tips would be to
  • carefully consult your mirror before embarking on your outing
  • when in doubt, consult a REAL friend (real friends will be brutally honest)
  • stay true to yourself
Now, go forth and accessorize with confidence!

Cheap & Chic

Cheap & Chic

Contrary to what most fashion media dictates Style doesn't have to be expensive.

You can find interesting and inexpensive, quality pieces almost anywhere. All you need is a strong sense of personal style and keen eye for what speaks to it.

If I am able to identify something I like, of good quality, at a price I'm willing to pay for it I GET IT! I don't care where I found it or whose name is on it.

In fact people are often surprised when I tell them where the item they compliment and/or covet came from, and are beyond shocked when I tell them what it cost.

I found each apparel item in this set online for $40 or less (yes, I comparison shop for the best price). I found the shoes in a designer outlet chain priced at less than $30 with an additional 25% Off. The jewelry of course are my own designs available in my online boutique (www.ProvocativExpression.com) and are very affordable as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Style is what YOU make, so you may as well make it your own!

Personal Style Calls for a Personal Touch

Provocative Expression

Personal Style calls for a personal touch...

Accessorizing your "outfit of the day" with handmade designer jewelry is likely the best way to express your signature style.

Handmade jewelry is usually made in limited quantity, meaning the likelihood of someone else having the same exact piece that you have is slim to none. At best, you may find something similar, but hardly ever the same.

At Provocative Expression I create elegant, easy to wear, upscale, exclusive, and affordable pieces in quantities of 5 or less. Many are one of a kind.

The next time you're looking for that special accessory, consider buying handmade. Malls are for trend chasers, not a "Style Curator" like yourself!

Visit www.ProvocativExpression.com today to put a personal touch on your personal style!

Spring 2013/Day to Night

One the trends highlighted this spring is black & white prints, another is floral’s. Borrowing from both I came up with this style set.

Building on the black & white floral printed jean I’ve created an chic & easy day look, as well as a simple but savvy evening look.

Transitioning from day to night is as easy as trading the tee for a plunging vest, the wedges for mirrored mosaic peep-toe pumps, the tote for a shimmering clutch, & simple silver chains for flamboyant crystal jewelry.

No matter which look you choose you’ll be simply stunning!

Vero Moda white short sleeve shirt, $21 / Black vest / Jane Norman flower print jeans, $48 / Charlotte Russe high heel shoes / All Jewelry from ProvocativExpression.com

Style Watch! The Gladiator Boot

Gladiator sandals have come and gone several times over on the fashionscape. Making it's most recent return to mainstream fashion just a few short years ago.

Gladiator boots from Versace runway SS 2013
Yeah I know what you're thinking... What's new about the gladiator?

It's been around for the last few summer seasons.

Well, I'll tell you what's new.

The gladiator is no longer just a sandal, it has evolved into a style that can grace other seasons as the weather permits.

Behold... The Gladiator

Boot!

Gladiator boots from Alexander Wang runway SS 2013

You like?

Part boot, part sandal, all together sexy....

Designers like Alexander Wang and Salvatore Ferragamo have represented this trend in their spring 2013 lines.

While the evolution of the gladiator sandal is trending for most, true style connoisseurs like myself have been ahead way of this curve... I bought this pair of Michael Antonio gladiator inspired ankle boots roughly 3 summers ago from a shop that was going out of business. Someone always wants to either snatch em off my feet, or know where I got them.

Guess it pays to have a knack for style as well as an eye for fashion... huh?

Here I am... Rocking my boots while partaking in my favorite past time, Karaoke!

Recessionista Files.....

So here we are again with another tale of great style finds at a deal so good I can't help but tell the world.

Last time I told you about an awesome pair of Oxford Stiletto's I copped from ShoeDazzle at the end of last year. Today I'm gonna tell you about my latest ShoeDazzle buys.

The site has gone under a few changes since last year. It has a new look, new head stylist, and new "sale" model.

Before BOGO's and other sales events weren't generally accessible. I found this out one day by looking through some items that I'd "favorited". Many of those selections were part of a BOGO sale that I otherwise wouldn't have know about. I contacted ShoeDazzle and complained, and they later provided me with the link to shop that sale. Any who, that is no longer the case. The "Sale" tab is there for all to see and shop if they so choose.

So last month I found myself once again on the ShoeDazzle site (after I temporarily suspended myself from shopping), on the last day of an additional 25% off sale. After browsing for a while I decided to suspend my suspension and take advantage of some of these deals.

Den - A reptile print, off shoulder, ruffled maxi dress.

Sheer with a built-in lining, and screams "resort"!

I matched it with metallic wedges, and bold turquoise statement jewelry to give it that complete resort feel.

Alcove - An airy and colorful hi-low dress with detachable slip.

I paired this little beauty with a pair of mid-calf western boots also found at ShoeDazzle (Anca). However, there are many possibilities for this cute little dress.

Danna - Oh I wanted these since I first saw them, but it just never seemed to go on sale. Until now! Like I said before I LOVE SHOES!!!!! Especially cute, interesting, eye catching shoes, and these absolutely fit that bill. I'm so excited to see what outfits I come up with built around these babies....

How much did all this cost? I thought you might ask.....

I'm gonna be so cute this spring/summer....

Spring 2013 Color Trends

What wonders does Spring 2013 hold? Lots!

Pantone has released it Spring 2013 Color Report, and Fashion mags across the board have published spring trend picks. All in all we have lots to get us started with our Spring Wardrobes...

According to Pantone Greens are the prevalent colors this spring including 3 shades in its 2013 color report.

From the brilliantly vibrant to the subtle and subdued green is expressive of what spring represents; nature, life, freshness, harmony, growth and well being.

Emerald, the most vibrant of the three leads the pack and is the focus of many creative professionals from apparel and accessories to makeup and jewelry. Also featured are Grayed Jade; a more subtle shade that promotes balance and relaxation, and Tender Shoots; a yellowish green that is energetic and playful.

Last season Tangerine ruled the runways, this season citrus tones are still represented with colors like Nectarine and Lemon Zest.

Other colors of the season include Linen, Poppy Red, African Violet, Dusk and Monaco Blue's.

Both Elle and Glamour have highlighted bold black and white geometric prints as hot this spring. Stripes, Blocks and Hounds Tooth are just a few of what to expect.

Leather is back. Yes, I said leather.... To many it may seem more like a fall fashion staple, but the fashion Gods say that it will reign this spring in rich tones and minimalistic shapes. I could definitely get behind the trend as an early spring choice when the weather is mild but still cool, but as the temps climb I would consider more comfort appropriate choices that won't sacrifice your savvy style sense.

Nobody knows better than me the discomfort that goes along with wearing that awesome looking little sequined ditty in your style arsenal.

Looks good, but itches like crazy! Lets not even get started on the messy glitter...

Go for an elegant beaded piece instead. It can be a headache to clean, and you may run the risk of losing a few here and there, but you'll look great! I promise....

One trend that I am personally excited about is the return of the sexy short suit! Not the "Daisy Duke" ensembles that overrun racks in the malls, but true grown woman sexy short suits... A tailored short and matching cropped blazer waiting to be styled however you like it best. As a fun day look, a sexy night look, or even a daring formal look.

Michael Kors, Tory Burch, Helmut Lang

Whatever you choose to stock your spring wardrobe with just remember that it's all about personal expression. So be as daring and creative as you please when mixing and matching this season.

Oh yeah and visit my own website www.ProvocativExpression.com for handmade jewelry to add to your spring style arsenal as well!

Recessionista Files.....

By now it's no secret that I LOVE snagging a deal! The one thing I could possibly love more is SHOES! The only thing that can top my love for shoes or a bargain is snagging a great deal on a great pair of shoes!

I joined Shoedazzle.com during the summer of 2012. I was looking for just the right pair of shoes to wear with this great summer dress I got for a steal at JCP. I didn't find that magical pair but I liked what I saw enough to keep looking. Soon I was a repeat customer, my first purchase was 50% off and every purchase after seemed to come with some kind of discount or perk.

By participating in surveys and giving feedback I earned store credits. One day I got an email that warned my credit (which I believed to be $10) would expire soon. I logged in to find that my $10 credit was actually a $25 credit (wow!) & so I got to shopping!

That's when I came across these babies.....

Naara from ShoeDazzle.com.

A super sexy, studded menswear inspired wingtip oxford, with tasseled laces, a 1.25" platform and 5.5" heel.

At 40% off regular price, and after my $25 credit the grand total for these sexy oxfords was only $3.92! Which means that I really only paid for shipping & even that was discounted since standard shipping is $4.95.

MAJOR SCORE!!!!!! Sexy, stylish, on-trend & definitely on budget!

If you like this shoe as much as I do you may be able to still snag a pair. At $20.97 these shoes are still a great deal, but they're only available in a few sizes.

They run a little big so all may not be lost if they don't have your regular size. I ordered size 8 so I could wear them with socks during these cold weather months, and even with socks they're still at least a 1/2 size too big. (Easily fixable with a cushioned in-sole and heel pad)

So head on over & snag your deal. BUT be warned that some discount items are FINAL SALE purchases.

Who says Champagne taste with Kool-Aid money is a bad thing?

Wardrobe Treasures..... From the Grocery Store?!

Me in my $20 Leather Jacket. Pic taken in 02'
I like a deal as much as anybody but there are somethings that I’m just not willing to comprimise on. For instance when grocery shopping I just won’t buy generic brand cereal, cheese, mayo or kool-aid. However, when clothes shopping I’ll buy whatever I like, wherever I find it, as long as it’s at a price I’m willing to pay.

About 12 years ago I was grocery shopping in Aldi (yes, I said Aldi) and I happened upon a black genuine leather jacket marked down to $19.99. I examined it closely & there were no rips, scratches, stains, or damage otherwise.

My 1st thought was “who buys clothes form Aldi?”. Then “It’s gotta be cheap & flimsy if it’s in here”. Lastly “well if I saw this anywhere else for $20 I’d probably buy it”.

So I did, buy it that is. Not only did I get compliment after compliment on the jacket and no one believed where I got it from, I still have the jacket to this day. Of course I can’t fit any more but my daughter can.

That was one of my 1st & most important lessons in developing my personal style. It doesn’t matter where you find it, or whose name is on the tag. If it’s a well made quality item that fits you, your personal style profile and your budget GET IT!

9 out of 10 times no one will know where it came from, nor will they care if you rock it right. Those who will know, know only because they too have been to that shop & probably bought (or considered buying) the same piece.

So revel is your style treasures found in unorthodox places. It’s one of the best things that sets us trend-setters apart from mainstream trend-chasers

What is Your Personal Style?

Personal style is defined as: A particular, distinctive, or characteristic mode or form of construction or execution in any expression of art or work. This is easily relatable to fashion and dress. Consider yourself your canvas & your “look” as your artwork. Since art is relative there really is no right or wrong way but you have to admit that everything is not pleasing to look at. Nor is it the best representaion of our very best personal attributes.

1. Know Thy Self - The very 1st step to defining your personal style is to honestly be in touch with who YOU are, and what image you want to present to the world. Are you the haute fashion type, or do you favor the look of effortless style? Are you wired more toward being on-trend, being comfortable, or a little of both? Examine some basic attributes about yourself with honesty such as lifestyle (or desired lifestyle), age, and/or career and you’re on your way.

2. Know What You Want - What are your style goals? Maybe you want to depart from your look of yester-year. You know that look that was all the rage back in 2002 but just doesn’t work for you anymore. Maybe you want to be taken more seriously on the dating-scape. Maybe your look is quite “stuffy” and you wanna loosen up a bit.
Decide what you want your personal look to accomplish and research looks that represent that. Fashion and style resources are literally everywhere these days. You can’t turn on your TV, laptop, tablet, or smartphone without being slapped with some form of fashion news/commentary!

3. Shop With Purpose - This step pulls double duty, not only can it help develop your personal style, it is also one of the most valuable style tips you ever get. While shopping look for things that accentuate your positives and camouflages your not so positives. Trust me your new look will be a total bust if your new wardrobe contains pieces that are ill-fitting.
If you’ve got killer gams (legs) show em’ off. Nice chi-chi’s… tastefully highlight them. A glutimus beautimus don’t diminish it by stuffing it into too-tight bottoms, or hiding under baggy-saggy ones either. Garments and fabrics that contain spandex are the best bet for curvy figures. BUT PLEASE UNDERSTAND THAT DOES NOT MEAN THAT SPANDEX ALONE IS YOUR BEST FRIEND!

4. A Little Fashion Literacy… - Goes a long way! You don’t have to be a fashion expert but you should know credible designers from which to draw inspiration. Knowing a little about fabrics and how they behave/fit is at the top of the literacy bullet points as well. Also, know the difference between fashion categories. While it’s cool to draw inspiraton from haute couture & editorial looks, it wouldn’t be very practical to rock such looks “as-is” and on a daily basis. Scale these grand looks down to the “ready-to-wear” level for a more practical approach.

5. Take a Style Inventory - Before you run to the mall to outfit your personal style, inventory what’s already in your closet. Or if you’re like me what’s in your closet, your storage totes, and your space bags!
If what you find doesn’t fit you anymore, or doesn’t fit into what you’re trying to accomplish GET RID OF IT! The “mom jeans”, the shoulder pads, the 90’s bulk, the stirrup pants…. time to go! Worn out, will never wear again, don’t understand why you ever bought it… evict it! Vintage is permissable, flat out of style….. Nope. If you don’t know what vintage is google it & you’ll get the idea.

6. Update Not Re-do - Now that you’ve weeded out the wardrobe undesirables, it’s time to add some new hottness. If you read my last blog post (I Am a Recessionista) then you already know what your wardrobe essentials are. If you haven’t read it, what are you waiting for!
If you don’t already have the essential pieces then this is your first assignment.
Next, think about accessories that can transform what you already have. You’d be surprised at how a new pair of shoes, a different belt, a jacket and/or sweater, or even jewelry can take an old piece & flip it fashion forward in an instant.
Also try mixing & matching pieces. Just because you bought them together doesn’t mean that you have to always wear them together. Experiment with colors, textures, and patterns to come up with something new.
Probably the most overlooked style enhancers are your hair & make-up. A new do & a fresh face can put “hey” in “hey now” when developing a new look.

7. Please Yourself! - Last but certainly not least, DO YOU! Wasn’t that the point of this whole excercise? To find and develop YOUR personal style? It doesn’t matter what I say, what any of the fashion pundits say, or what your friends & family say… If you’re not comfortable and/or satisfied then you haven’t accomplished YOUR personal style. Go back to the beginning and this time HONESTLY assess who you are and what you want accomplish with your look.
On the other hand if you can’t be any more pleased with the outcome then CONGRATULATIONS! Your journey to personal style has been a wild success. BUT don’t get married to this stage of your style. Things inevitably change as we move through life and our personal styles should be among those things. Not necessarily dramatic, but definitely appropriate for who we are in our lives at that moment.
