Trials, Transitions & Triumphs

I'm sitting alone in a lil cafe in my home town having breakfast reflecting on the events of this year so far...

Things have gone from comfortable to bad. From bad to worse and back round' again.
In the midst of it all I've learned some great things about myself. Nothing highlights your strength, resilience, creativity and resourcefulness like navigating your way tough times.

I realize now that I'm transitioning out of my period of tribulation, that this wasn't a series of random unfortunate events but the necessary kick in the tush needed to open my eyes to what I'm capable of accomplishing.

One in my position might consider themselves back at square one, but I consider myself steps ahead. The reset button may have been pushed on my wherewithal, but my life in general is in full forward progression and picking up steam. Yet with all things considered I can confidently say that as good as God has been to me in this life already, the best is yet to come

Beef With the Chef??!!

The saying goes "opinions are like a$$holes, everybody has one" & rumor has it that we're entitled to have said opinion... By the simple nature that we're individuals & supposed independent thinkers it stands to reason that our opinions are occasionally going to differ.

I'm a person who welcomes differing opinions, I don't automatically label thinking not inline with my own as "shade" or "hate" I believe that feedback of all types is crucial to our personal growth, development, and/or improvement. Which is why I am dumbfounded by a recent & unfortunate incident stemming from having expressed my honest opinion re: a post by Chef Roble Ali  on a social networking platform that resulted in what I believe to be an unwarranted block.

I have given him my full and unwavering support, countless acknowledgements and/or accolades, and even engaged with him directly a few times over this past year. I honestly weighed in on his "Black Girls Rock" ensem and promptly had my "follower" privileges revoked!

Me, the same follower that met & took pictures with him just a few short months ago. That he in his own words referred to as "amazing" in a comment on one of my posts for that event. That he cheered just a couple of weeks ago for advocating his right to enjoy an inexpensive wine or three if he so chooses...

As unfortunate and as hard as it is to wrap my head around being banished to the infamous InstaGram "d-block" by Roble for merely being honest, I have no option but to respect his right to do so. At the end of the day it is his account to do with what he will.

Although I'm no longer privy to the funny, witty and occasionally raunchy IG antics of Chef Roble I'll remain an avid fan/supporter of him and all of his endeavors. I'm confident that as a person who values his right to express himself honestly (as he routinely does) in a society where bandwagon jumping is all to common, he ultimately appreciates honest feedback. I'm sorry that he found my comment to be anything other than that and am hopeful that he accepts my sincerest apology. I'm not necessarily looking to be granted a reprieve from "d-block" but I'm also confident that one day in the not so distant future this incident will be a laughable recount of "remember when"...

A Simple Guide to Accessorizing...

I'm confident that all fashion/style professionals would agree that accessories can make or break an outfit. Seriously, we've all watched Project Runway at some point and witnessed a contestant get ripped to shreds over poor "styling" choices. So I've put together a few simple points of rule for successful accessorizing.

Purpose: Accessories should reflect your personal aesthetic and are supposed to compliment or enhance your look, not overtake it. Nor should it add an element of confusion.

Accessories can pick up/highlight an understated tone/color in an outfit. Add an element of contrast to monochromatic look. Give energy to an otherwise demure look. Even transform a single outfit into a totally different look.

Proportion: For me, proportion matters. Frankly, the "statement" trend has led many to (as we say in my circle) "do the most", which by-the-way is not a good thing. If your outfit is making a statement all by itself, your accessories should not add the "?" to the "!" essentially invoking that "what type of foolishness?!?!" reaction. In this scenario the K.I.S.S (keep it simple sweetie) method should be considered.

Outside of that, choose where/how you want to make your statement. Your ears, neck, and wrist don't all need to "shout" at the same time creating an environment of competing noise. Statement earrings... simple complimenting necklace. Bold necklace.... downplay your earrings.

Bracelets however, offer a little more flexibility since your wrist isn't right up there with your other  pieces. For me, size/color/style are influenced by the details of the top/jacket I'm wearing in concert with the style of my other accessories. For example...

When I wear this bib necklace (my own design) I allow it to be the focal accessory. Depending on my outfit, my earring choice is usually one of three;

  • the ones designed to match
  • simple wooden window pane dangles
  • gold plated Aspen leaves w/lever back ear-wires

My bracelet would likely be a cuff on one arm and a mixed stack of bracelets on the other.

If I'm dressing down, the cuff would be a 3 inch multi-strand wooden stretch.

If I'm going for something a little more upscale I'd ditch the mixed stack and wear a simple tennis bracelet on one arm and on the other a 2-3 inch polished gold metal cuff (smooth or textured depending on my mood). So now in either scenario I'm completely adorned, but not over-done.

Necklaces: Simple tops are the perfect backdrop for a great statement piece. Whether a big/bold/colorful piece, or layers of mixed metals in varied lengths.

Heavily patterned or embellished tops call for a more subtle approach. A simple bold link chain or pendant will do. In this case less really is more.

With halters, or tops will already ornate necklines I usually forgo additional neck-wear and focus more on the ears, wrist, hair & shoes.

Bracelets: Awesome displays of arm-candy are the trend. Stacked bangles, multiple layers of beads, multi-chain, and wide cuffs, with a little bling thrown in for flair.

There really aren't many rules for bracelets. My best advice is to make  sure your choices are appropriate for the occasion. In other words and arm full of stacked beads/bangles might not be the best choice for a formal gown.

Earrings: Choosing earrings aren't just about your outfit, or your other styling choices. The shape of your face and the length of your neck also play a factor. For instance, dangle earrings (in my opinion) don't fair well on women with short necks. However, hoops seem to be a universal "good fit" for everyone. Hoops come in varied sizes and styles making them appropriate for virtually any face shape, neck size, outfit, and/or occasion.

I, myself, am a fan of the dramatic dangle. Yet, even I have to  occasionally defer to the almighty hoop.

Last and maybe most important, your earrings should not battle with your necklace. Choose only one to be the standout, either the earrings or the necklace.

Rings: I am not a huge wearer of rings, but the trend seems to be leaning toward "anything goes". I don't subscribe to that philosophy however. I do like some of large statement pieces, and cocktail baubles. I also like the stacked look. I do not, however, support the ring on every finger look. It is ridiculously excessive.

There you have it... my two scents on how to  effectively accessorize. My only other tips would be to
  • carefully consult your mirror before embarking on your outing
  • when in doubt, consult a REAL friend (real friends will be brutally honest)
  • stay true to yourself
Now, go forth and accessorize with confidence!

STILL BUZZED ON ROBLE....

So... If you've read my last few posts you should be well aware that I am a HUGE fan of Roble Ali...

I definitely have an affinity for the man, but not in that fanatical, crazed, groupie sorta way. I mean... he's handsome, and talented, and funny, and engaging, and stylish, and accomplished, and I really could go on but more than any of those other things he is inspiring! That's it... he inspires me.

I've watched his show since episode 1, season 1. I've since done some research and learned more about his story. He isn't just some fly-by-night phenom nor the latest over night sensation, he's been honing his craft damn near his whole life. Through training, working his way up the rungs, and forging integral relationships (despite his tendency to at times be quite curt) he has parlayed his passion into a lucrative career. As he explains in season 1 of his show, he wanted to do his thing - his way. So he took his life savings, stepped out on faith, worked hard & made it happen!

Roble's story isn't necessarily unique, but it is definitely inspiring and it resonates with me because my story is very similar although he's way ahead of me chapter wise.

I've worked myself ragged helping million/billion dollar organizations fortify their bottom lines, all while being paid literal peanuts. I managed the day-side logistics/replenishment process in a high performing location of big-box retailer that easily generated more than a million a day in revenue. After that I went to work as a store manager for a well known discount chain where my hours were 10 -16 a day 6-7 days a week, literally. Where I took a store drowning in loss and turned it around in 9 months. This was my last experience as an "employee". I've always known that I wasn't meant to be any one's  employee, but that was the moment I decided that I never would be again.

With all that said, forging my own path and building my own empire has been a series of exhilarating highs & very trying lows. Yet I persevere, and when I see that next awesome experience/opportunity that Roble is embarking on I get excited and renewed! Why? Not because I get to live vicariously, but because Roble is proof positive that earnest effort and hard work does pay off.

So yes... I am still totally buzzing on having met him, and even more having him acknowledge meeting me!

It's not everyday that someone gets the opportunity to me the source of their inspiration. I DID & I'm gonna be buzzing off that for a while... so deal with it! (Lol)

EVERYDAY PEOPLE BRUNCH CHICAGO WITH CHEF ROBLE ALI & SKYY VODKA

If you don't know who Roble Ali is... WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN DOING WITH YOUR LIFE??!!

Not only is he one of the hottest and most talented up and coming chef's, he's the star of his own reality show Chef Roble & Co. which airs on Bravo TV.

On August 18th together with Skyy Vodka he brought the first ever installment of the Everyday People Brunch to Chicago and Provocative Expression was in the building!

He started the brunch/day party movement in New York with good friends Saada Medny and DJ Moma, which from what I understand, was a simple small get together for extremely diverse group of friends. Since then it has grown to be the ultimate day party experience with a super exclusive guest list in its home state. Roble often touts via his Instagram profile that the monthly New York installment is "invitation only" and if you're privileged enough to be extended actual membership "all we ask is trust". How secret society is that?! More recently the trio of comrades have taken the show on the road making stops in major cities all across the country.

I had a phenomenal time at the brunch. I ate, drank, partied and even got a little networking in. The icing on cake however, was actually meeting Roble and having him compliment the shirt I made especially for this event. My method was crude, I literally accosted the brother as he walked by but hey, you gottta do what you gotta do. (Lol)

By the way, if you ever have the opportunity to taste Roble's 'shrimp and grits' do not pass it up! I grew up in a household that favored buttered & sugared grits, so to have something so savory and flavorful just blew my mind.

I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next time Roble brunches in Chicago. However, I would love it even more to experience the famed New York event. The only thing better would be to attend the New York event as Roble's special guest.  (You hear that universe?!) I already have tshirt #2 ready to go!

Will Wonders Never Cease?

I spent the better part of the weekend testing the validity of the wonders of hydrogen peroxide.

We already know that it's great for cleaning wounds, and whitening teeth. I learned when my now 18 year old middle child was just a toddler that it's an excellent way to soften and remove ear wax. Following a major surgery last year I learned that it was the recommended safest way to clean the compression garment I was required to wear.

More recently when trolling social networking sites I came across a post that touted forty some-odd ways hydrogen peroxide could be used around the house. I didn't test all forty, just the ones that could possibly solve issues I have going on...

Whitening Whites: I have a slew of white button down tops in my closet that get absolutely no wear because they're no longer that crisp bright white that we all love so much against our favorite denims.

I filled a large container with just enough water to cover the shirt, added a teaspoon of Dawn dish liquid (it's what I had on-hand, but also what the post called for), then added roughly 1/4 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide.

Swished it around a little and let is soak for about 45 minutes, then rinsed. Low and behold the bright white state was restored! I was so impressed with the results that I soaked every white shirt hanging in my closet one by one using the very same solution I initially mixed.

Stain Removal: The post stated that peroxide is the main ingredient in the high priced oxygen based cleaners (which I've used before with unremarkable results). There are a couple of stains on my sofa courtesy of my littlest one that I'd been yet unsuccessful in resolving. Tempera paint on one cushion, hyper-cement of the other, both more than a year old.

For this test I removed the microfiber slip covers and place a towel inside underneath the stain. I squirted a little bit of Dawn dish liquid directly onto the stains and worked it in with an old toothbrush. I then saturated the stains with the peroxide. After a few minutes I sprinkled a little baking soda and created a paste. I worked the paste in with the tooth brush adding more peroxide as necessary. I let is sit for roughly 20 minutes, then I threw the slip covers into the washer and ran a short cycle with water only. Tumbled dry on the "air" setting.

Results: Tempera paint, gone! Hyper-cement still slightly visible, but definitely lessened.

Plant Maintenance: It was said that mixing the peroxide in when watering your plants was good for the plants root systems. I have a few bamboo plants and one very large aloe vera plant. For some reason the leaves on one of the bamboo keeps turning yellow, and my aloe vera plant has been "droopy" lately.

These plants are the test subjects for this experiment. I'll have to do a follow up post for the results.

I also attempted to clean a scorched pan, and the grease splattered wall behind my stove with the paste mixture. Let me tell you... the pan hasn't looked as good in a really, really long time, and the wall is free of all traces of grease splatter.

Hydrogen peroxide may just be the best household "wonder" item since apple cider vinegar! I invite you to further investigate household uses for hydrogen peroxide and share your stories. Til next time...

Cheap & Chic

Cheap & Chic

Contrary to what most fashion media dictates Style doesn't have to be expensive.

You can find interesting and inexpensive, quality pieces almost anywhere. All you need is a strong sense of personal style and keen eye for what speaks to it.

If I am able to identify something I like, of good quality, at a price I'm willing to pay for it I GET IT! I don't care where I found it or whose name is on it.

In fact people are often surprised when I tell them where the item they compliment and/or covet came from, and are beyond shocked when I tell them what it cost.

I found each apparel item in this set online for $40 or less (yes, I comparison shop for the best price). I found the shoes in a designer outlet chain priced at less than $30 with an additional 25% Off. The jewelry of course are my own designs available in my online boutique (www.ProvocativExpression.com) and are very affordable as well.

I've said it before and I'll say it again... Style is what YOU make, so you may as well make it your own!

The BEST Things About Handmade...

One of the BEST things about being a handmade jewelry designer is being able to create beautiful pieces on the fly... I created this summery bauble to compliment my outfit one evening last month.

One of the best things about buying/wearing handmade jewelry is the aire of uniqueness and exclusivity one can achieve... You add an element to your overall look that everyone will likely admire but can't easily imitate. As such, a lot of my jewelry is literally bought of my person.

Making the decision to offer this particular for sale was anything but easy. I mean if I held on to every piece I've designed/created that I liked I'd literally never sell anything!

Visit my online boutique for this and other great handmade jewelry pieces.

Chef Roble & Co Season 2 - Over So Soon????

As a die-hard fan of +Roble Ali and his show on Bravo TV; Chef Roble & Co last night was a bittersweet moment. It marked the end of the show's way too short season 2.

I caught the first episode of season 1 by chance and was immediately hooked. I mean... here's this handsome, humorous and stylish guy who can cook! Going after his dream to launch a premiere catering and event planning company with a  perspective of "fly or fall". I was impressed to say the least by this positive image of a young black man embarking on such an endeavor.

With season 2 came an increased affection for this show and it's ensemble of characters. Roble may be the center, but it's apparent that teamwork makes the dream work.

Aside from a much more intense Roble (and that's putting it mildly), we saw fellow chef's Adam Banks and Che "Gravy" stepping a little more into the spotlight, even launching their own web series dubbed "Bank$ & Gravy"... pretty entertaining stuff!

We also saw Jasmine Ali define and establish her role in the company as Event Coordinator. Her clashes and struggles with both Roble and Artie; (Event Director) made for riveting reality tv. In the end it was all love, the events were successful (with one exception), and I often found myself literally cheering by the end of each episode.

Sweet treat professional Kiku saw quite a bit of drama this season as well. I was all wrapped up in my feelings watching how the limits of the personal and professional relationships between her and Roble were tested.

The season finale featured John Legend and Chrissy Teigen. I LOVED this episode for several reasons, but primarily because of the client's attitude and approach regarding the event. It was refreshing to see this beautiful and accomplished woman, with a seemingly great sense of humor, dismiss pretentiousness and just have a good time.

If I could lodge any complaints about season 2 of Chef Roble & Co. they would be:

* Way too little Shawn Knights! His dancing is right up there with Che and his
   personal vernacular...

*  It was too damn short! Two words; MORE EPISODES!!!

*  Last, we had to wait too damn long for it! Get it together Andy Cohen!

All and all, I love the show, I adore the cast, and I can't wait for next season. Until then....

Personal Style Calls for a Personal Touch

Provocative Expression

Personal Style calls for a personal touch...

Accessorizing your "outfit of the day" with handmade designer jewelry is likely the best way to express your signature style.

Handmade jewelry is usually made in limited quantity, meaning the likelihood of someone else having the same exact piece that you have is slim to none. At best, you may find something similar, but hardly ever the same.

At Provocative Expression I create elegant, easy to wear, upscale, exclusive, and affordable pieces in quantities of 5 or less. Many are one of a kind.

The next time you're looking for that special accessory, consider buying handmade. Malls are for trend chasers, not a "Style Curator" like yourself!

Visit www.ProvocativExpression.com today to put a personal touch on your personal style!

Bottoms Up!

Cuba Libre or Rum & Coke as it's more widely known, is a common (and rather uninspired) cocktail.
I'm always on the lookout for new spins on "old hat" & I think I may have found one worth trying!
Enter the Smokey Cardamom-Coconut Cuba Libre...
I found a recipe posted on Pinterest, but it was way to involved for my liking. I'm an "acceptable" shortcut kinda gal.
Based on that recipe this is what I came up with...

Ice
2 oz Coconut rum
Simple syrup (to taste if necessary)
Cardamom extract (1-2 drops)
Fresh squeezed lime to taste.
Garnish w/orange & lemon rinds
Pour rum over ice, add cardamom, squeeze orange/lemon slices over the top, stir, discard the fruit flesh, & garnish with the rinds.
Very different from any Rum & Coke I've ever had... Try it! Add your own little tweaks & share your thoughts.
Cheers!

The Ombre Lip...

I saw this pic on Instagram and it took me back to my late teens, early 20's....

Back then I worked in a popular fast food chain and one of my co-workers wore her lip-color in a way that made me take pause. See, at a time when most were doing the super harsh black lip line, this young lady lined her lips a shade or two darker than her lip-color, feathered it in nicely, and topped it off with just the right amount of shine.

At that time I really wasn't a fan of makeup, rarely even wore it in fact, but I admired her lip-color technique and wanted to replicate it. So I went on the hunt for shades that would work with my skin tone.

This was the early to mid 90's so fuchsia WetNWild was all the rage, I used this to line my lips. Next up was Summer Punch by Avon (discontinued of course, I miss it so). I would press my lips together to blend the colors, then blot with a tissue. Last I applied a pale pink shimmer to the inner lip, and a light layer of gloss to finish it off.

This pic is from 1993, it's a little hard to see the detail here, but it's there. (Ain't I cute?!)

As you can see in the very first pic the Ombre Lip has undergone a ramped up make-over and has come back much bolder than before.

The idea is the same, but the colors are much more vibrant and daring.

There are number of tutorials out there online. All sorts of demo videos on YouTube, some over complicated in my opinion, but choose the one that's right for you.

For me it's as simple as this....

Step 1: Prime your lips. Use a lip primer or lip balm, whichever you prefer.

Step 2: Line your lips. Back in the day I used lipstick applied with a brush because I didn't like the chalky dry feel of lip liners. However, lip liners have come a long way and there are some pretty good ones out there.

Step 3: Add you contrasting but complimenting color. Again for me, I go a shade or two darker than my liner. Once applied, press your lips together to blend the shades.

Step 4: This step is about personal preference. At this point you can add to innermost part of your lip a nude/pale shade to further emphasize the Ombre effect.

Step 5: Add just a touch of shine with the gloss/moisturizer of your choice.

I'm in love with this look all over again, and I encourage you to try it! Play around with colors, and develop a technique that works best for you.

Avoiding an #EpicFail!

Have you ever been out and came across someone that made you wonder... "does she/he own a mirror?" Or, conclude that the person you're watching has not one true friend?

Well I have, and experiencing such assaults on my unassuming eyes has prompted me to discuss a few of the things that can render your look an #EpicFail!

Understanding that your look starts with your underwear will spare so many from falling victim to this crime. How do you build something spectacular without the proper foundation? Duh.... you can't. So keep the following in mind when laying the foundation for your look:

  •  Choose the right panty.  Visible pantylines and waistbands are tres passe. It looks terrible and nobody wants to see them. Thongs are a good choice for those of you who can tolerate them. I prefer a seamless low-rise brief with the "stay put" banding that prevents riding. I find Target's Gilligan O'Malley brand both affordable and effective.
  • Choose the right bra. This should be common sense. If your outfit calls for a strapless, racer-back,  or deep plunge bra then that's what you should wear. If you're worried about going strapless (like me), or have experience problems before try an invisible strap, they're usually sold in packages of 3 in the same department.
  • Choose the right color. Contrary to what most women think matching your underwear to your outfit is not always the best option. When wearing light colors (especially white) your underwear should be dark. Black, navy, charcoal, or deep brown. Why? Simple, IT DOESN'T SHOW! Generally matching/coordinating printed under garments work best with opaque wardrobe choices, or looks that call for that "peek-a-boo" effect.
  • Choose the right size! There is not a more disturbing sight than a woman in underwear that is too small. Heaven forbid it be under an outfit that is also too small.
  • Last but not least know when a good foundation garment is necessary, and then choose the right one for the job!
The next component that can quickly turn a thumbs-up to a thumbs down is shoes. Ladies open-toed and/or slingback shoes allow us a little leeway, but please understand that it is not a license to buy a shoe that simply doesn't fit. Too often am I seeing women on the street with either their toes or heels literally hanging off of the shoe. Just stop the madness please!

Which moves us to the next logical thing, jewelry and accessories. Choose carefully when picking these items. You want to compliment your look, not overwhelm, underwhelm, or otherwise detract from it. Notice I said "your look" and not "your outfit". Your accessories are the components that helps to bring your entire look together. A bad decision here can ruin the whole effect.

The same is true for hair and makeup. Your makeup should compliment your features and skin tone. Coordinate with your outfit, and be appropriate for your age and/or environment.

Hair is probably the most important and overlooked attribute of a great look. The wrong hair can ruin even the best outfit.

When creating your look of the day simply start with an idea. You don't have to get married to any one selection. For me things rarely work out the way I see it in my minds eye on the first try.

This top isn't working with that bottom. This bra looks awful under this top. "Which shoes goes best?" These earrings are too much! So on and so on.... So I keep trying until everything is right.

When all else fails I got two words for you... ASK SOMEBODY! Then impress upon them that you need honest feedback. In that same spirit, BE HONEST with your friends/family when they miss the mark.

Together we can rid the world of these fashion faux pas one styling violation at a time.

Style Watch! The Gladiator Boot

Gladiator sandals have come and gone several times over on the fashionscape. Making it's most recent return to mainstream fashion just a few short years ago.

Yeah I know what you're thinking... What's new about the gladiator?

It's been around for the last few summer seasons.

Well, I'll tell you what's new.

The gladiator is no longer just a sandal, it has evolved into a style that can grace other seasons as the weather permits.

Behold... The Gladiator

Boot!

Part boot, part sandal, all together sexy....

Designers like Alexander Wang and Salvatore Ferragamo have represented this trend in their spring 2013 lines.

While the evolution of the gladiator sandal is trending for most, true style connoisseurs like myself have been ahead way of this curve... I bought this pair of Michael Antonio gladiator inspired ankle boots roughly 3 summers ago from a shop that was going out of business. Someone always wants to either snatch em off my feet, or know where I got them.

Guess it pays to have a knack for style as well as an eye for fashion... huh?

Recessionista Files.....

So here we are again with another tale of great style finds at a deal so good I can't help but tell the world.

Last time I told you about an awesome pair of Oxford Stiletto's I copped from ShoeDazzle at the end of last year. Today I'm gonna tell you about my latest ShoeDazzle buys.

The site has gone under a few changes since last year. It has a new look, new head stylist, and new "sale" model.

Before BOGO's and other sales events weren't generally accessible. I found this out one day by looking through some items that I'd "favorited". Many of those selections were part of a BOGO sale that I otherwise wouldn't have know about. I contacted ShoeDazzle and complained, and they later provided me with the link to shop that sale. Any who, that is no longer the case. The "Sale" tab is there for all to see and shop if they so choose.

So last month I found myself once again on the ShoeDazzle site (after I temporarily suspended myself from shopping), on the last day of an additional 25% off sale. After browsing for a while I decided to suspend my suspension and take advantage of some of these deals.

Den - A reptile print, off shoulder, ruffled maxi dress.

Sheer with a built-in lining, and screams "resort"!

I matched it with metallic wedges, and bold turquoise statement jewelry to give it that complete resort feel.

Alcove - An airy and colorful hi-low dress with detachable slip.

I paired this little beauty with a pair of mid-calf western boots also found at ShoeDazzle (Anca). However, there are many possibilities for this cute little dress.

Danna - Oh I wanted these since I first saw them, but it just never seemed to go on sale. Until now! Like I said before I LOVE SHOES!!!!! Especially cute, interesting, eye catching shoes, and these absolutely fit that bill. I'm so excited to see what outfits I come up with built around these babies....

How much did all this cost? I thought you might ask.....

I'm gonna be so cute this spring/summer....
