Me in my $20 Leather Jacket. Pic taken in 02' |
I like a deal as much as anybody but there are somethings that I’m just not willing to comprimise on. For instance when grocery shopping I just won’t buy generic brand cereal, cheese, mayo or kool-aid. However, when clothes shopping I’ll buy whatever I like, wherever I find it, as long as it’s at a price I’m willing to pay.
About 12 years ago I was grocery shopping in Aldi (yes, I said Aldi) and I happened upon a black genuine leather jacket marked down to $19.99. I examined it closely & there were no rips, scratches, stains, or damage otherwise.
My 1st thought was “who buys clothes form Aldi?”. Then “It’s gotta be cheap & flimsy if it’s in here”. Lastly “well if I saw this anywhere else for $20 I’d probably buy it”.
So I did, buy it that is. Not only did I get compliment after compliment on the jacket and no one believed where I got it from, I still have the jacket to this day. Of course I can’t fit any more but my daughter can.
That was one of my 1st & most important lessons in developing my personal style. It doesn’t matter where you find it, or whose name is on the tag. If it’s a well made quality item that fits you, your personal style profile and your budget GET IT!
9 out of 10 times no one will know where it came from, nor will they care if you rock it right. Those who will know, know only because they too have been to that shop & probably bought (or considered buying) the same piece.
So revel is your style treasures found in unorthodox places. It’s one of the best things that sets us trend-setters apart from mainstream trend-chasers
