Although winter has been fairly mild here in my sweet home Chicago, for me it's still prime time for dry skin worries. My main trouble spots are my elbows & legs. In the past I tried all kinds of products that are supposed to help remedy the problem but none (that I could afford) consistently lived up to the hype.
Only after completing nail technology training and working for a little while as a nail technician (a lil tidbit you didn't know about me) I learned how to use simple and inexpensive household items to achieve real results.
For my ashy elbows I used plain ol' petroleum jelly or as most of us know it "Vaseline"! Applying just after bathing/showering, and at bedtime. I learned that most lotions contain water and ultimately evaporate which can leave skin dry and ashy.
Vaseline is an oil based emollient that helps to lubricate and protect skin, making it appear smoother and softer to the touch. I also use Vaseline on my lips, hands and feet to keep them all kissably soft. (yes I said all of them! Lol)
*nail tech tip: To keep soft feet (assuming that you slough your heels with pumice in the bath or get routine pedicures), at bedtime apply Vaseline liberally and put on a pair of white 100% cotton socks. This allows the Vaseline and your body heat to work together while you sleep to repair and soften rough heels*
One other thing Vaseline is good for is removing eye makeup. However I would be careful not to over use it on the face. It'll give your skin a nice shine, right before the potential breakout you'll experience from the clogged pores!
For my scaly legs and I add olive oil from my kitchen cupboard to my bottle of lotion. I personally use Palmer's Cocoa Butter lotion. After I add the oil, I simply shake the bottle vigorously to mix it & that's it! I read this tip in one of my nail tech trade mags & tried it & it worked wonders on my legs, & does an overall wonderful job as a general body lotion.
So there you have it.... my two cents on dry skin relief tips. I hope they work out for you as well as they have for me.
